The opening scene of this movie is entirely unexpected – laid-back country as background music to a truck cruising along a country road in near pitch dark, until light from a distant town appears. This is as contemporary as you can get although some critics indicate that the time frame is set in about a decade in the future. Hardly matters.
As suggested in my summary line, this is a pugilistic movie that just happens to have robots in the ring, as proxies for human beings. This works at two levels. For the plot, it means that human boxing is outlawed and hence robots become substitute. For the real story, the protagonist is just as much in the ring even when he physically is not.
Once you get through to accept the main premise (which is not difficult as the movie makers wisely did not make a fuzz at all about robot boxing but simply introduced it in a matter-of-fact manner) this is really a very familiar movie: reconciliation of a strayed father to a heavenly 11-year-old son, the boy's relationship with his pet robot which may very well have been a faithful dog, the David-Goliath confrontation of the underdog, a fallen man's redemption and realization of an unfulfilled dream. can probably find a few more.
All these human stories are woven through four robot fights.
We start with Charlie (Hugh Jackman, an uncustomary yet well performed role) bringing his impressive robot "Ambush" to a country fair to fight against a bull which was supposed to be 800 pounds but turns out to be 3,000. While Ambush became scrap metal and Charlie ran from his debts, news came that his abandoned girlfriend had died, leaving 11-year-old Max (Dakota Goyo, young "Thor" an actor now for whom the sky is the limit) whose custody he eventually "sold" to his sister Debra (Hope Davis, shamefully underused but still good to see) and her well-meaning husband for money to replace his robot. But he had to keep Max for a couple of months first, until the couple returned from a European trip.
The second fight features a world-class boxing robot "Noisy Kid" that he bought back after its extensive world tour, looking very Japanese, and actually responding only to Japanese vocal instructions until reprogrammed by Bailey (Evangeline Lilly, radiating heart-melting warmth whenever she is on the screen) his old sweetheart and daughter of his late mentor. Through the preparation of Noisy Kid, animosity between estranged father and son started to evolve into bonding. But as a result of the adult's hasty decisions against the kid's mature cautioning, Noisy Kid got demolished by Midas, despite a good start. Another pile of scrap metal.
The story really begins when Charlie saved Max from a near-fatal accident which was also instrumental to the kid's discovery of a G2 (i.e. second generation, near-obsolete) robot Adam that was designed only as practice partners (i.e. punching bag) of real fighter robots. Upon Max's insistence, Bailey and Charlie turned Adam into a respectable fighter with a winning streak in small circuits, culminating in a big league victory over the formidable "Twin City" The ensuing development is predictable and does not require elaboration. The climatic fight was against the unbeatable mighty "Zeus" with a predictable uplifting finale, predictable yet marvellously exhilarating. Manipulative? Yes. Melodramatic? You bet. Nonetheless, this is an absolutely first class feel-good movie.
